LAW - UN Women
2022
This 4-minute video (The video has not yet been released to the public) depicts a conversation between a survivor of sexual assault during Lebanon’s civil war, and a group of young Lebanese people from various sects and political points of view who were born after the war ended and did not see its violent toll firsthand.
The survivor’s account is one of myriad previously untold stories about gendered crimes perpetrated during the war; many serious violations and abuses that occurred during the conflict have been kept secret by victims, survivors, and witnesses.
Shame and social norms contribute to the silence around gendered crimes, but crimes that are not shared and go unrecognized are more likely to be repeated. Subsequently, the video aims to motivate youth to play a crucial rolein the task of truth-finding and accountability as it relates to the Lebanese CivilWar.
This video was made for Legal Action Worldwide and funded by UN Women to support civil warvictims and survivors — elevating their voices, sharing their testimonies, recognizing the crimes they endured, and holding perpetrators accountable. Indoing so, we can ensure that these crimes do not happen again.
